Art Direction & Pre-Production

Most shoots fail before they start. Art direction means translating a brand brief into a precise visual plan — moodboards, lighting diagrams, prop lists and shot lists — so shoot day runs fast, clean and on budget.

Available as a standalone service for direct clients, or alongside an agency's own creative team.

  • Visual moodboard & direction deck
  • Lighting design & reference images
  • Shot list & call sheet production
  • Props sourcing & styling brief
  • On-set creative direction & client liaison

Corporate and editorial portrait photography Malta by Stephen Galea

Corporate & Editorial Portraits

Headshots, team photography, executive portraits, and editorial people photography. I work on-location at client premises and in the studio.

For corporate teams, I run portrait sessions efficiently — most people in front of a camera are uncomfortable, and moving through a team of 20 people without losing quality on individual images is a workflow skill, not just a photography one.

  • Executive and leadership headshots
  • Team photography for websites, LinkedIn and company communications
  • Editorial portraits for press, publications and company materials
  • Lifestyle and brand personality photography
  • iGaming company portrait commissions

The right setup for the job

Not every shoot needs a campaign rig. I scale the production to what the job actually requires — never more, never less.

Essential

A focused, efficient shoot — typically 1–2 hours on set — with 1–2 lights and a clear shot list. Ideal for social content, quick menu updates, simple product shots or a small batch of headshots. Still includes planning, professional lighting and retouched delivery.

Standard

3–4 light setup with tethered shooting on set. Ideal for menu photography, product ranges, team portraits or hotel rooms. Includes styling direction and full retouching.

Full Production

6+ lights, focus stacking, full styling and art direction. For advertising campaigns, packaging hero shots and brand imagery that needs to work across every channel.

Common questions

Yes. Not every job needs a full day or a six-light setup.

I offer Essential shoots — focused 1–2 hour sessions with 1–2 lights, a clear shot list and fast delivery. Ideal for social content, a quick menu refresh, or a small product batch.

You still get proper planning, professional lighting and retouched images. The only difference is the scale.

Depends on what you need.

I don't maintain a model database — for talent I'll give you a clear brief (age, look, wardrobe) and a budget-appropriate sourcing route.

For everything else — set building, location scouting, food and beverage styling, compositions, studio or on-location shoots, editing, post-production, mockups, consultation on best practice, prop lists and wardrobe choices — I handle the lot.

I can source props too if the timeline allows, though most clients prefer to handle that themselves.

Given a proper budget, I can take a project from brief to final files without you managing multiple suppliers.

A single product or food shoot: 1–3 days (pre-production to delivery). A full campaign with multiple locations: 2–4 weeks. I provide a specific timeline with every quote. With 20+ years of experience, I work fast without cutting corners.

I ask what the images are for before I plan the shoot — not just for budget, but because it changes how I light.

Social media, print, billboard and OOH all require different approaches.

Even on a white background, I light differently depending on where the image will end up and what mood needs to come across.

If the final asset will sit on a dark background, the set lighting is different from a product destined for a bright e-commerce grid.

The mood, the feel, the message — all of that starts with the light.

That’s why I ask.

Each project gets its own tailored equipment list — from a parabolic reflector and a full lighting kit to specialised food styling tools, surfaces, and props.

Some jobs require a van‑load of gear. Others need a focused, lighter setup. Either way, preparation before the shoot is what guarantees the shot list gets completed on time — no matter the scale.

It depends. Every project is different — complexity is the main variable.

Social media shoots where the setup stays simple usually approx 2–4 hours, though I still bring lights. A simple pack shot takes less time than a multi-scene shoot with hero food styling.

Styling matters too. If I'm styling and shooting, it takes longer than if a stylist is already on set and I'm directing and lighting. Example: hampers — if I'm composing the hamper from scratch, lighting and shooting, that's a long day. If the hamper is built and I'm just lighting and shooting, much faster.

Location and lighting add time. Even in the middle of Valletta or Sliema, I rarely shoot with just a camera and tripod — adding lights extends setup.

I'll give you a realistic estimate after reviewing the brief and shot list.
